Remember back to Week One, when I went to the Black Milk sample sale? Well, this was one of my purchases. I was worried about the skirt being sheer, but with a black slip underneath it was a nice summer outfit.

Tuesday December 15

I love this dress so much. I searched for it online and was lucky enough to, after months of hunting, have a lovely Trashy Diva girl sell it to me. And it still had the tags on! It then spent a couple of months hanging in my closet because I had a pageant theme that worked well with it. Now I've retired, the dress is fair outfit game!

This is possibly the greatest Christmas  t-shirt I have ever found. A Mickey shirt for Mickey. I am a bit disappointed that I didn't also grab the Minnie Mouse one, but for me, it's all about Mickey.

Thursday December 17

Before December, I wrote a rough list of the sorts of outfits I wanted to wear for this challenge and one of them was an angel theme. I searched and searched for a white dress to wear, couldn't find one, gave up on being an angel, and then my mum told me she had some (which was about five). This one was perfect! I considered wearing the wings to work, but people got the idea without. No outfit details for this one (but you should all shop your mum's wardrobes). My halo is made from Christmas wire that you can buy at every bargain store, and I just wrapped two colours together. The wings are from Bargain City and my angel brooch is thrifted. 

Friday December 18

It's no secret I love Black Milk. One of the things I've loved since I started buying from them is their holiday-themed designs. This year I didn't love their Christmas collection though, so I started chasing the buy sell swap group for the older Christmas designs that I'd passed up. You've already seen the Christmas tree dress. This is the second one and it's gorgeous. The print is so vibrant and Christmassy! It's a little short though. 

I had just picked up this tie front shirt from Mamar Dynamite (who custom made this for my measurements - no gapey buttons. So many more posts about Mamar to come!) the day before, so I tried it out over the top. And my pudding earrings are my favourite and most tacky Christmas jewellery!

I went into Brisbane City to see the Christmas parade and light show on Sunday. We had dinner down by the river and it was lovely to see the bridge lit up in Christmas colours.

Searching for my Frosty Palace: Rick's Garage/Diner

My search for my own Frosty Palace has continued. And sort of ended at the same time; because I’ve found what I think is the perfect place; Rick’s Garage/Diner.

Rick’s is in Palmwoods, which is in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. It’s been on my list for a while and I begged some friends who live around the corner, to take me there when I visited them recently.
It’s a huge space with a bar, dining room, outdoor dining, and a massive, fully functioning garage downstairs. The walls are plastered with photos of customers, pinup girls and vintage memorabilia. It’s eclectic, up-cycled, industrial and bloody fantastic.

We found a seat in a booth, made from repurposed race car seats. Our burgers were huge (even mine, which was a mini) and completely delicious. The milkshakes were proper milkshake size and reasonably priced (unlike some places where they’re tiny and twice the price of these) and it was a damn good shake. My friends, who are locals, tell me there are good bands that play, it’s licensed so you can enjoy a good night out, there are open mic nights and a lot of car clubs go and visit. But for me, one of the most important things is that a place has atmosphere in normal days, not just when something’s on. And Rick's certainly has atmosphere in spades.

I’ve seen a lot of girls shooting there, and now I’ve been there myself, I desperately want to organise to get back there for my own shoot!

The only problem with Rick’s is that it’s in Palmwoods, about an hour’s drive from my place in North Brisbane. And so while it’s not too far away to visit regularly, one of the requirements of my own Frosty Palace is that it’s central enough to become a hang out.

I do have a couple more places on my list to check out, so will keep searching. But in the meantime, if you’re heading up around Palmwoods way, make sure you check Rick’s Garage/Diner out!

Searching for my Frosty Palace: The South Side Diner

When I lived in America, diners were my absolute favourite places to eat. I loved turkey burgers, fries, onion rings, grilled cheese sandwiches, disco fries and black and white milkshakes (my hips didn’t though). I love the booth seating, the jukeboxes and the rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. The diner down the road from my apartment in New York, The Midnight Express Diner, was cosy and friendly and they were open all night for late night snacks. It was cheap and cheerful and they even delivered (and I lived in the same street…. Hmmm).

It’s been something that I've really missed. Brisbane’s been a bit lacking in the vintage destinations for a long time. We’ve got places to shop in spades; That Shop, Your One Stop Pinup Shop, Tattooed Zombie, Trash Monkey and more, but when it comes to dressing in your retro best and heading out for a night on the town, we don't have many choices.

When the South Side Diner opened late last year, it was the answer to many of these prayers.
Decked out in a modern twist on the retro style, with wooden bar seats, long booths (minus the sticky red vinyl), burgers served in baskets and milkshakes with striped paper straws, it’s a cute but upmarket take on the traditional diner style, which I really like. The food runs a little on the pricey side, and there’s not much choice for vegetarians (though, this has been acknowledged and is getting better), but it fits well with the modern take on the style it’s got going. I’d call the food more soul-food than traditional diner fare.

I've been to the diner quite a few times now and while I've mostly enjoyed what I've had to eat, I keep finding that I want to love it more than I actually do. We went for New Years’ Eve and at the last minute the menu went from a set one to a limited list which was really disappointing when we’d made our choices. We also found the atmosphere a bit lacking for what was advertised and were disappointed that we’d gone all out on the dress-ups and it wasn't acknowledged (even though there was a best dressed competition running).

That being said, I went along with a group for the 4th of July last week, where there wasn't promise of lots of entertainment — just a few specials and some good music on their sound system. It was a night of lower expectations than New Years’ and I enjoyed the atmosphere and food a lot more, probably because of those lower expectations.

 

Stand outs on the menu are their burgers, all of their amazing mac and cheese dishes (which are two for one on Monday nights), and their appetisers and sides like mozzarella sticks, sweet potato fries, corn on the cob and chicken wings. I’ll never not be upset that the amazing onion rings left the menu a couple of weeks after they opened, but as long as the sweet potato fries stick around, I think I’ll survive.

I’m not a huge fan of their desserts – especially the cherry pie which instead of being a steaming hot slice of fruity goodness is a cold pie with a cheesecake top, but my friends say the chocolate peanut butter pie is to die for and I know the kids love the ice-cream.

It’s a good destination place for the occasional dinner, but it’s probably not going to become my Frosty Palace hang out. However, I’ll still get dressed up and go here (because let’s face it, I always get dressed up), and I’ll still visit on American holidays.
